Elinaza Mjema (PhD) is an archaeologist with research interest on using archaeological approaches to understand the genesis, change and continuity of maritime communities on the western coast of Indian Ocean. While teaching at the University of Dar es Salaam, he has been running field schools of archaeology students from University of Dar es Salaam since 2010. Also, he has trained as underwater archaeologist in order to protect underwater cultural heritage of Tanzania. He conducted his PhD project at Pangani Bay focusing on 8th to 15th centuries AD Swahili archaeology. Currently he investigates the archaeology of colonial encounters on the Tanzania coast from 16th to 19th centuries AD.
